VETERANS CAN TAKE FREE LEAD-SAFE CERTIFICATION CLASS IN MUSKOGEE

A free class on May 12 and 13 will certify eligible Muskogee-area veterans to work for contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint.

The Veterans Workforce Investment Program at East Central University in Ada has joined with the Oklahoma Association of Community Action Agencies to offer the EPA Lead-Safe Certification Program at the Muskogee Workforce Office at 717 S. 32nd St.

The Certified Renovator Course is an eight-hour course taught in a classroom setting and includes hands-on training in lead-safe work practices. Participants will be tested on their ability to carry out lead-safe work practices and must pass a written exam.

Each participant will receive a certification card or form within a few days following the course. The certification document must be maintained at the work site. OKACAA will maintain the documentation of each person certified and provide that information to the EPA. Certification will be good for five years.

The Environmental Protection Agency requires that firms performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes, child care facilities and schools be certified by the EPA and that they use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers to follow lead-safe work practices.

For more information or to sign up for the class, contact Stan Balch, VWIP director at ECU, at 580-559-5711, or case managers Jordan Elizarde and Preston Hoover at 580-559-5807 and 580-559-5808, or a local Workforce Office
