ECU HELPING FAMILIES 'COUNTDOWN' TO COLLEGE

Do I really need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)? What's my Expected Family Contribution and how is it calculated?

Questions like these are on the minds of many families sending students off to college next fall. That's why East Central University is partnering with the Oklahoma Guaranteed Student Loan Program's UCanGo2 initiative on Feb. 16 [TUESDAY] to help families learn more about preparing, planning and paying for college. ECU will host its College Countdown from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the University Center.

It will be part of a series of College Countdowns being held at colleges and universities across the state in February, which Gov. Brad Henry recently designated Financial Aid Awareness Month.

"We know this time of year is when students typically begin working on the FAFSA, so we're inviting prospective students, their parents and local high school counselors to our campus to learn more about preparing financially for college," said Marilyn Schwartz, ECU's director of financial aid.

The Financial Aid and Educational Opportunity Center staff will be on hand to answer questions about financial aid and to assist families in completing the FAFSA. Representatives from a variety of ECU programs will be available to inform students and parents about the various services that can be provided to students once they come to campus.

Participating programs include Veterans Upward Bound, Math and Science Upward Bound, McNair Scholars Program, ECU's Gold Program, Native American Voices Project, Disabilities Services and the Student Development, Career Development and Housing Offices.
